Level 1 vs Level 2 charging
Level 1 uses a standard 120 V outlet and adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a 240 V circuit and delivers 7 to 19 kW, or 20 to 45 miles per hour.
Which one do you need?
- Level 1 is enough if you drive under about 40 miles a day and park at home 10+ hours.
- Level 2 makes sense if you drive more, share the car, want cheap overnight rates, or live somewhere cold.
Cost
Level 1 costs nothing extra. A Level 2 charger costs about $300–700 plus $500–2,000 installation. Compare both for your car in the charging time calculator.
